Texas
The Lone Star State
About Texas
Texas offers a different kind of American summer, with live music, barbecue, big cities, and wide-open landscapes. The Work and Travel program offers employment opportunities with employers in Austin and Montgomery, by Lake Conroe. Austin, the state capital, brings concerts, South Congress shopping and cafés, and kayaking or paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake. Montgomery and the Lake Conroe area offer a quieter resort setting, lake views, and water activities.
In Austin, you can find a second job in restaurants, cafés, hotels, and shops, but check transport between your housing and each workplace. Around Montgomery and Lake Conroe, resorts, restaurants, and retail businesses are places to look, with availability depending on the season and your location. Do not assume everything is within walking distance. Additional work is not guaranteed and must fit around your main schedule and be approved by your program sponsor before you start.
After work, enjoy live music, try Texas barbecue or Tex-Mex food, take a lakeside walk, or explore local shops and cafés. Austin offers parks and waterfront trails for days off, while Lake Conroe has boating, fishing, and a relaxed resort atmosphere. Texas summers are hot, so plan outdoor activities around the weather and prepare for the sun.

I have been part of the Orange team for two seasons and love helping students take one of their boldest journeys. I joined Work and Travel on my own and came home with countless new friendships. I have spent two incredible summers in Massachusetts and explored many of the USA’s best-known and more remote corners.
