About Rhode Island

Rhode Island is the smallest US state, with plenty to experience along its coast. The Work and Travel program offers employment opportunities with employers in Newport, Westerly, and Watch Hill, a coastal community within Westerly. Expect sandy beaches, marinas, historic buildings, and a distinctive New England atmosphere. Newport is known for its grand mansions and the Cliff Walk, while Watch Hill and the Weekapaug area offer beaches, sea views, and resort hotels.

In Newport, you can find a second job in restaurants, cafés, hotels, and shops around downtown and the waterfront. Summer visitors also create opportunities in hospitality and small retail businesses in Westerly and Watch Hill. Check the journey from your housing before accepting a role: coastal neighbourhoods are not always within walking distance of one another. Additional work is not guaranteed and must fit around your main schedule and be approved by your program sponsor before you start.

On days off, explore Newport’s waterfront, tour a historic mansion, try kayaking or paddleboarding, or spend an afternoon on the beach. Watch Hill offers coastal views and walks near its lighthouse, while Westerly has a welcoming downtown with cafés and shops. Local seafood, sunsets, and sailing opportunities make time off an important part of the experience.

My name is Daniel Hristov and I am a second-year Financial Control student at UNWE. I work as a beach attendant at Ocean House in Westerly, Rhode Island. As summer comes to an end, I am taking home so many positive moments and unforgettable memories with new and old friends.

This summer in America has been unforgettable on my J1 Work and Travel adventure. From hanging out with friends after long days, laughing together and capturing little moments, to just enjoying the simple things like being outside and feeling free, every day has brought something special. It’s been a mix of work, new friendships, and experiences I’ll carry with me long after the summer ends.

This year is my first time being part of both the Orange team and the Work and Travel programme. I spent my summer on an island in Massachusetts, and it became an unforgettable memory. I hope to help new students experience the same adventure and take their first steps towards a whole new world.
