Minnesota
Land of 10,000 Lakes
About Minnesota
Minnesota, the Land of 10,000 Lakes, suits students who enjoy forests, waterfront scenery, and quieter communities. The Work and Travel program offers employment opportunities with employers in Grand Marais and Hinckley. Grand Marais sits on Lake Superior, with a harbour, galleries, local shops, and views from Artist’s Point. It is a base for exploring the North Shore’s waterfalls, walking trails, and state parks. Inland Hinckley offers a different setting, with hotel complexes and opportunities to explore the St. Croix State Park area.
Summer visitors create potential second jobs in Grand Marais hotels, small restaurants, shops, and tourist businesses. In Hinckley, you can look for additional work in accommodation, restaurants, and retail, but the choice is more limited than in a large city. Check transport and the distance from your housing: not every workplace is walkable. A second job is not guaranteed and must fit around your main schedule and receive your program sponsor’s approval before you start.
On days off, walk along Lake Superior, visit a gallery or local café, cycle, or choose a forest trail. Around Hinckley, parks offer hiking, camping, and canoeing opportunities. Choose suitable locations and conditions for water activities: Lake Superior remains cold even in summer. Lake views, sunsets, and local culture make time off part of the adventure.

Orange Sofia, Studentski grad
This year is my first time being part of both the Orange team and the Work and Travel programme. I spent my summer on an island in Massachusetts, and it became an unforgettable memory. I hope to help new students experience the same adventure and take their first steps towards a whole new world.
